JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The Marist men's basketball team (8-20 overall, 4-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) suffered a 72-62 loss to Saint Peter's (9-17, 6-10) at the Yanitelli Center on Monday. The Red Foxes were led in scoring by red-shirt junior guard Javon Parris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who both tallied 15 apiece.
The Peacocks never led throughout the game, setting the tone by getting out to a 10-1 lead. The Red Foxes never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
Akeem Gooding paced three Peacocks in double figures with 23 points, including a 13-for-18 performance from the free-throw line. Wesley Jenkins and Nick Leon finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Ryan Bacon added nine points, a game-high 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. The Peacocks shot 29-for-37 (.784) from the free-throw line in the game.
For Marist, Parris went 4-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from three-point range and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. He also dished out a team-high four assists. Schneider, who hit three three-pointers, now has 936 points in his career. Red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, and red-shirt junior guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) scored 12.
Marist will return to action Saturday in its home finale, as the Red Foxes take on Hartford in an ESPNU BracketBusters contest. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., and the program will hold its Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
