FAIRFAX, Va. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 6-5 loss at George Mason in 11 innings on Wednesday. Senior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) went 3-for-6 for the Red Foxes, who have now dropped six straight.
Trailing 5-2 after six innings, the Red Foxes knotted the game by scoring three times in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the Red Foxes within two runs. Freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single to tie the score at five apiece.
George Mason scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Uphouse, which plated Spencer Wiggins, who had led off the inning with a single.
Marist had opened with the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning. Sophomore second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single, and was driven in on an RBI double by red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.). Nugent then scored on a two-out single by red-shirt senior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.).
George Mason scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, and the Patriots ran their lead to 5-2 by scoring twice in the sixth.
Freshman right-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.), who did not allow any hits or runs in the 8th, 9th and 10th. Sophomore left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) started for Marist and allowed four runs in 5.1 innings.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes play at McCann Baseball Field for the first time this season by opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Iona. The Red Foxes and Gaels will play a doubleheader starting at noon, followed by a single game Sunday at noon to conclude the three-game set.
