Highlights

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior pitcher Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) threw a two-hit shutout in game two of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) softball doubleheader as Marist swept Iona on Saturday at the Softball Park At Gartland Field. Carpentier got the save in game one and the win in game two. In two one-run games, the Red Foxes took the first 3-2, and the second 1-0.

Carpentier fanned nine batters as she threw a complete game shutout in game two after she earned a save in game one. On the afternoon, the senior right-hander totaled 13 strikeouts in nine innings. It was her third shutout of the season, which matches her career total at the start of the 2009 season.

The lone run of game two was scored by senior Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.). After she led off the bottom of the third with a single through the middle, she came around to score on a Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) single. Green finished the day with three RBIs.

In the first game of the twinbill, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as senior Green hit her fourth home run of the season to right field. That was all the offense Carpentier needed as she went to work in the circle to earn her fifth victory of the year.

Iona answered in the third with a solo shot of their own off the bat Erin Kyle to cut the Marist lead to 2-1.

The Red Foxes would pad their lead in their half of the third when Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) drove in Megan Lameuroux (Woonsocket, R.I.) on a single to make the score 3-1. Lameuroux scored two runs in game one.

Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned her third win of the season in the first game of the afternoon. She pitched five innings gave up two earned runs and struck out four.

Schell she put the go-ahead run on base in the sixth, Carpentier came in to get the Red Foxes out of the jam as she retired the first three batters she faced.

Carpentier pitched two innings in game one to earn the save, her fourth of the season, in game one.

Winners in six of their last eight games, Marist (9-15, 2-0 MAAC) will return to action this Tuesday, March 31 when they host the University of Albany Great Danes at 2:30 p.m. for a doubleheader. The games will take place at The Softball Park At Gartland Field.
