BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep at Canisius with a 6-5 victory in game two on Saturday. Trailing 5-2 after four innings, the Red Foxes tied the game with three runs in the fifth and scored once in the sixth to complete the comeback.
Freshman right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.) earned his first collegiate victory by pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Rifkin entered the game in the fifth and closed it out, allowing just two hits and one walk to improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Red Foxes had 13 hits in the contest. Junior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led the way by going 3-for-5, while sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) had two hits apiece.
Gauck's RBI single in the top of the fifth drove in Meyer to tie the game at five apiece. In the sixth, junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) drove home pinch-runner Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Marist has now won six straight and stands at 12-8 overall and 5-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Canisius is now 11-13 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will conclude their three-game series with the Golden Griffins on Sunday. First pitch is schedule for noon.
