BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team dropped its series finale on Sunday to Metro Atlantic Ahtletic Conference rival Canisius on Sunday, falling by a score of 18-0. The Red Foxes took two out of three in the series, and now stand at 12-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Red Foxes were held to just four hits, as freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.), senior center fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.), sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and senior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) each had one single.
Canisius opened the scoring with three runs in the second. The Golden Griffins added five in the third, six in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth. Canisius left fielder Ian Choy went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and third baseman Kevin Mahoney hit two home runs.
Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) started and took the loss for Marist, falling to 1-3. Martin allowed six runs, four of which were unearned, in 2.1 innings. Senior left-hander Peter Barone (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, getting five outs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Marist returns to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host Binghamton of the America East Conference. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at McCann Baseball Field.
