POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist student-athletes took part in a pair of community service projects this past weekend, both of which were held at the McCann Center. On Saturday, March 28, student-athletes from eight different programs assisted in a Special Olympics regional event for basketball, power lifting and aquatics. The following day, the men's and women's basketball programs participated in the 18th annual Kids' Day Out program.
The Special Olympics event was attended by student-athletes from the Red Foxes' football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving and water polo squads. Shooter, the Marist mascot, was also in attendance. A total of 270 Special Olympics athletes participated in the events.
Kids' Day Out was presented by the Red Foxes' men's and women's basketball teams in conjunction with the Marist Office of Special Services. The players on both teams provided instruction in basketball fundamentals for those between five years old and high school age. The registration fee of $10 for each participant benefitted the Marist College scholarship for students with disabilities.
