ALBANY, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team allowed its fewest points ever as a Division I program on Friday afternoon, allowing Loyola to score only 27 in an 81-27 win in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals at the Times Union Center. The Red Foxes' previous low came on Dec. 10, 2006 when they allowed Manhattan to score 30 in a 70-30 win at the McCann Center. The win is also a MAAC Tournament record for fewest points allowed and largest margin of victory.
Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led five Marist players in double-figures with 15 points, adding four rebounds. Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 12 points. Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) had 11 points, making all five of her shots from the field, with five rebounds and a game-high six assists. Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) had 11 points and a game-high six rebounds. Emily Stallings (Newburgh, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 10 points.
Marist (27-3) opened the game on a 10-2 run with Fitz scoring eight of the first 10. After Meredith Tolley hit a three-pointer to make the score 10-5, Johnson hit a three at the 13:04 mark to put the Red Foxes ahead 13-5. Viani and Kristine Best (Commack, N.Y.) followed with threes of their own to put the Red Foxes ahead 19-6 with 10:32 to go in the half. Marist got a triple from Viani with 6:12 left in the first half to go ahead by 19, 29-10. Loyola got a Siobhan Prior jumper with 5:36 to go in the first to make the score 29-12, but that was the Greyhounds last basket of the half. A Fitz layup sparked an 8-0 run to end the half, making the score 39-12.
Loyola (10-20) got within 24 at the 18:39 mark of the second half on a Prior three. After that basket, Marist went on a 14-0 run capped by a Stallings jumper to go ahead 55-17 with 12:57 to go in the game. The Red Foxes got the lead up to 40 at the 8:59 mark of the second when Corielle Yarde (Leesport, Pa.) split a pair of free throws. Loyola made only 3-of-24 shots from the field in the second half and Marist shot 59.3% to pull away for the 54-point win.
Marist shot 54.4% from the field in the game and 40% from the three-point line. Loyola shot 15.4% from the field, making 8-of-52 shots. The Red Foxes outrebounded the Greyhounds 44-27 and assisted on 27 of 31 field goals. Marist only committed nine turnovers in the game to Loyola's 15. Kaitlin Grant led Loyola with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Foxes will take on the winner of the Saint Peter's/Iona quarterfinal Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The game will be televised on MSG2.
