NORFOLK, Va. - Red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) drove in seven runs as the Marist baseball team cruised past Norfolk State by a score of 14-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Nugent went 4-for-5, including a double and his third home run of the season.
The Red Foxes scored three runs in the first. After freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) tripled to lead off the game and then scored on a fielding error, Nugent drove in two runs with a double to give Marist a quick 3-0 lead. The Red Foxes added two runs in the third to run their lead to 5-0. Marist scored six times in the sixth, and then closed out its scoring on Nugent's three-run homer in the eighth.
Senior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) went five innings to earn the victory, allowing just one run. Rickards gave up five hits and two walks while striking out three as he improved to 2-0 on the season. He was relieved by junior righty Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.), who pitched the sixth and seven innings. Sophomore lefty Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) closed the game out, pitching the eighth and ninth innings.
