POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist crew program retained the President's Cup as both squads raced against Army on Saturday. The Red Foxes won three of five races contested for the cup: the Women's Varsity 8, the Men's Novice 8 and the Men's Varsity 4.
In the women's varsity eight, the ladies handled the harsh conditions well en route to a first place finish with a time of 8:35.2. The Red Foxes finished 21.5 seconds ahead of Army, who crossed the finish line with a time of 8:56.7.
In the men's novice eight race, Marist took first place with a time of 8:30.0. Two Army crews finished second and third with times of 8:38.5 and the B squad finished with a time of 8:52.4.
The men's varsity four raced against three other crews including, Army, RIT and Rhode Island; however, RIT and Rhode Island did not compete for points in the President's Cup. In the race, Marist took first from all four crews with a time of 8:17.2. RIT took second with a time of 8:21.6, Army came in third with a time of 8:44.0, while Rhode Island rounded out the field with a time of 9:00.7.
The days' events could not be completed due to harsh conditions. The following races were not contested: the second men's varsity four, the women's varsity four and the men's novice four.
Marist will compete in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Sunday, April 19 in West Windsor, N.J. The Red Foxes will look to win their ninth consecutive crown on the men's side and fourth straight on the women's side.
