Marist Erupts For 14 Runs, 16 Hits In Victory At NYIT

April 17, 2009

Box Score

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - All nine members of the starting lineup had at least one hit as the Marist baseball team cruised to a 14-6 triumph at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in a non-conference game on Friday. The Red Foxes pounded out 16 hits as they climbed back over the .500 mark on the season at 18-17.

Senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) and senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) each had three runs scored and two RBIs. Junior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-6 with four RBIs, and freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Senior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) pitched seven innings to earn the victory. Rickards allowed all six NYIT runs, five of which were earned, but he struck out nine against just one walk. He improved his record to 4-2, and is now tied for the team lead in victories with senior closer Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.). Freshman right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.) finished it out by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth. Rifkin allowed three hits, but induced a pair of double-play balls. He also struck out one.

The Red Foxes trailed 2-1 after three innings, but erupted for five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

NYIT fell to 11-20 with the loss.

The teams will continue their three-game series on Saturday, as the Red Foxes will head back to NYIT for a 1 p.m. start. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) is Marist's scheduled starter. Putnam is coming off a seven-inning complete game in his last start against Rider on April 11, as he earned his first collegiate victory. The teams will then wrap up the series on Sunday, with a single game at McCann Baseball Field slated for 1 p.m. Fans can follow all the action for both games on GoRedFoxes.com, as there will be a live blog of Saturday's game and an audio broadcast of Sunday's contest.
