FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team saw its 2008-09 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinals at the hands of the top-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles. The final match score was 6-1. Sophomore Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) earned Marist's lone point at sixth singles in the days quickest match.
Lukin earned her point at singles in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 over Brittany Walters. In between sets she made some key adjustments to make her second set go much smoother. She noticed some key weaknesses of her opponent and attacked them to pick up the victory. Lukin wrapped up her sophomore season with three consecutive wins and a dual MAAC dual match record of 6-2.
Freshman Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) played a very tight match at first singles. She was bested in three sets by Hilary Hansen, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (2). In the third set, she had a 5-1 lead before Hansen crept back in to get the win.
Three other first sets were tightly contested but the Purple Eagles pulled them all out. At third through fifth singles, Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) all dropped their first sets 7-5, to make each individual match much closer than the final score indicated.
Marist concludes the 2008-09 season with a record of 6-11 and a fourth place finish in the MAAC. The team was picked to finish seventh in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
