NEWARK, N.J. - Seven Red Foxes had two hits apiece, and the entire starting lineup had at least one hit as the Marist baseball team cruised to a 12-2 victory in a non-conference contest at NJIT on Thursday. Sophomore left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) allowed just two unearned runs over six innings of work as he improved to 2-0.
The Red Foxes started the scoring with five runs in the second, as they had five consecutive hits in the rally. A two-run single by red-shirt senior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) made it 2-0 Marist, and senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0. Meyer then scored on an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.), who came around to score himself on an RBI single by junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.).
Senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) led off the third for Marist with his first home run of the season, a shot over the left-center field wall to put Marist up 6-0. Later that inning, the Red Foxes advanced their lead to 7-0 when Meyer's infield single plated senior catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.).
In the top of the fifth, an RBI double by junior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored Anderson to make it 8-0.The Red Foxes scored again in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Prano, which scored Meyer.
NJIT scored twice in the fifth to cut Marist's lead to 9-2, but the Red Foxes scored twice more in the seventh. Gallic scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-2, and after Prano drew a walk, an RBI triple by sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) put Marist up 11-2. The Red Foxes closed out the scoring in the eighth when freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
On the mound, McKeown struck out three and allowed five hits and two walks. Sophomore left-hander Peter Barone (Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.
Prano, McDonough, Stanton, Luderer, Anderson, Meyer and Gallic finished with two hits apiece. Prano, Anderson and Meyer drove in two runs apiece.
Marist improved to 14-9, as the Red Foxes have now won eight of their last nine. NJIT is now 1-7.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, when they begin a three-game series against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Manhattan with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
