Box Score
VESTAL, N.Y. - Trailing 4-0 after the first inning at Binghamton, the Marist baseball team came back to tie the game at 5-5 going into the bottom of the eighth. However, the Bearcats scored three runs in the eighth to win 8-5 Tuesday afternoon. Designated hitter Richard Curylo (Staten Island) went 4-5 in the lead-off spot and drove in two runs. Rightfielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) also had two runs batted in while going 2-5.
Binghamton (21-15) came out swinging in the bottom of the first, as Jim Calderone and Peter Bregartner each singled off of Marist's starting pitcher Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.). Kyle Klee then drove in both runners with a single. Corey Taylor followed up Klee's two rbi single with a two-run home run to right field, making the score 4-0 Bearcats. Cary got out of the inning by getting a strikeout of Joe Charron and a pair of groundouts.
Marist (22-20) got on the board in the top of the third inning. After a groundout started the inning, Curylo and Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) had back-to-back basehits. After a Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) fielder's choice and Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) walk, McDonough hit a two-run single to right field to cut Binghamton's lead in half, 4-2. The Bearcats would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning as Taylor hit a double to left field, scoring Klee to make the score 5-2.
The Red Foxes scored one run apiece in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to tie the game at 5-5. Marist scored in the top of the sixth on a Curylo rbi single, driving in Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.). Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit a fielder's choice in the seventh to score Nugent. Meyer led off the top of the eighth with a triple to center field. Curylo then hit a single to center, bringing Meyer around to score. Pitcher Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) gave up only one hit in the fifth and sixth innings. After Gallagher gave up a lead-off single to Bregartner in the bottom of the seventh, Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.) came in and promptly got Klee to roll into a double play for the first two outs of the inning. After giving up a base hit to Taylor, Meyer threw him out at second base from center field on a single by Dave Ciocchi.
Binghamton, however, would get to Rifkin in the bottom of the eighth. With the game tied at 5-5, Charron led off the inning with a single to left field. Matt Simone then reached on a bunt with Charron taking second on a Nugent error. Both runners then advanced one base on a Rifkin error. Rifkin then loaded the bases by hitting the catcher C.J. Lukaszewski. Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) then entered the game, looking to get Marist out of the bases loaded jam. That would not happen as Eric Secor cleared the bases with a three rbi double. Wiley would not give up another hit after that. Marist got two runners on in the top of the ninth inning but could not push across another run.
Cary pitched four innings for Marist, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. Binghamton's starting pitcher, Walker McKinven, also went four innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Morgan Smith got the win for the Bearcats, pitching the final three innings.
