FISHKILL, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 10-3 loss to Army in the fourth annual WPDH Hudson Valley Baseball Classic on Wednesday before 2,754 fans at Dutchess Stadium. Freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) hit a two-run double in the second inning for the Red Foxes.
Army's 3-4-5 hitters - shortstop Clint Moore, first baseman Kevin McKague and designated hitter Joey Henshaw - each had three hits apiece. Henshaw drove in four runs and belted a home run.
Army scored two runs in its half of the first, but the Red Foxes tied the score on Luderer's two-run double in the top of the second. However, Army answered with four runs of its own in the second to take a 6-2 lead.
In the fifth, Marist right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) led off the inning with a double to center, and came around to score on an infield error. The Red Foxes did not get a hit in the final four innings. Army then scored two runs in the fifth, and Henshaw's two-run homer in the sixth capped the scoring.
Tyler Anderegg (5-2) earned the victory for Army, tossing 3.2 innings of hitless relief while striking out four. Sophomore left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. McKeown started and went the first two innings.
Junior left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had two hits for Marist, making him the only Red Fox with a multi-hit game.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes go back to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Saint Peter's beginning at noon. The teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
