POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Junior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, lifting Marist to a 2-1 victory over Fairfield in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes can clinch a MAAC Tournament berth with a win in game two of its doubleheader, or a loss by Rider in game two of its doubleheader against Saint Peter's.
Senior closer Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory and improve to 7-1. Wiley surrendered just one hit and struck out three. He entered the sixth with the potential go-ahead run on third base with two outs, but recorded a strikeout to end the inning before permitting just one baserunner in the seventh and eighth.
Fairfield scored its lone run in the top of the first when center fielder Ryan Furbeck singled to lead off the game and scored two batters later on a triple by second baseman Tucker Nathans. The Red Foxes tied the game in the third when senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.).
Sophomore right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) started and went the first 5.2 innings. He allowed eight hits, one run and two walks while striking out two.
Schwind went 2-for-3 in the game, and red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 3-for-4.
