Marist Baseball Clinches MAAC Tournament Berth

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist baseball team has clinched the third seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament after completing a three-game series sweep of Fairfield on Saturday with a 9-1 triumph in the second game of a doubleheader. Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and struck out 12.

Marist concludes the regular season with records of 28-25 overall and 15-9 in the MAAC. Marist will open the MAAC Tournament against second-seeded Canisius on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. The MAAC Tournament utilizes a double-elimination format, and will run from Thursday-Sunday. Check back throughout the week at GoRedFoxes.com for further information.

Martin allowed just two hits, three walks and one unearned run. He retired 12 consecutive batters between the first and fifth innings. Martin improved to 5-5 on the season.

After Fairfield scored once in the first, the Red Foxes took the lead by scoring four times in the third. Schwind led off by reaching on an error, and Nugent followed two batters later with a home run to right-center to put Marist up 2-1. Two batters after that, Gauck added a two-run homer to give the Red Foxes a 4-1 lead. Marist made it 5-1 in the fourth when Meyer led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Schwind.

Marist closed out the scoring with five runs in the fifth. Senior catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) cleared the bases with a three-run double, which scored Nugent, senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) and Gauck. Meyer followed with a single to score Stanton and give the Red Foxes a 9-1 advantage.

Gauck went 3-for-4 in game two with two runs scored and two RBIs. Nugent led Marist in hits in both games of the doubleheader combined with five.
