JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 7-4 loss at Saint Peter's on Sunday in the finale of a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series. The game was called off in the bottom of the eighth inning due to rain. Senior catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) and freshman center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) each hit solo homers for the Red Foxes.
Saint Peter's opened the scoring with a two-run homer by designated hitter Mike McGuire in the second inning, but Stanton's homer in the third cut the Peacocks' lead to 2-1. However, McGuire homered again in the fourth inning, a solo shot to give Saint Peter's a 3-1 lead. The Peacocks ran the score to 5-1 in the seventh when an infield throwing error with two outs enabled two runs to score.
Marist rallied for three runs in the eighth. Schwind led off the inning with a homer to left-center. A double by freshman third baseman George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.), making the score 5-3. The Red Foxes made it a one-run game on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.), which scored senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.).
In the bottom of the eighth, a two-run double by catcher John Lynch gave the Peacocks a 7-4 lead. Following Lynch's at-bat, the game was called due to rain.
Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) took the loss for the Red Foxes, falling to 4-4 on the season. Martin pitched six innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and just one walk while striking out seven. Craig Hughes (3-4) earned the win for Saint Peter's, striking out 11 in 6.2 innings. Frank Flynn got the Peacocks out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and pitched the eighth for his third save of the season.
