WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - After splitting the first two sets of its match at Hartford Wednesday night, the Marist volleyball team won the next two sets by identical 25-17 scores to beat the Hawks 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17). Junior outside hitter Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had 13 kills with a .455 hitting percentage and five blocks.
Freshman Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Marist defense with 17 digs.
Marist (2-2) jumped out to a fast start as two Schmid kills powered an early 5-1 lead. Hartford closed to within two at 7-5, but a Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) kill put the Red Foxes back up by three. The Hawks hung with Marist, and eventually tied the set at 15-15 on a block by Michelle Cordell and Hallie Fullagar. Marist quickly went back up by three as Foss and Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) combined for a block, making the score 18-15. The Red Foxes led 20-18 when Hartford went on a 4-0 run, capped by an Erin Macro kill, to take a 22-20 lead. Marist tied the set at 23-23 on an Estes block and again at 24-24 on a Harridsleff kill. After a Hartford error gave Marist a set point, the Red Foxes won the set 26-24 on a solo block by Foss.
After Hartford (2-2) won the second set 25-20, the two teams traded points early in the third set. With the score tied 3-3, the Hawks went on a three-point run on the serve of Sarah Boss to go ahead 6-3. With the score 7-4, Marist responded with a Foss kill and two straight aces en route to scoring five unanswered points and a 9-7 lead. The Red Foxes held the lead until 13-12, when a Cordell kill tied the set at 13-13. Marist trailed 15-14 when Foss put down the first of four straight kills which gave the Red Foxes an 18-15 lead. A Burke kill put Marist back on serve at 20-17, and Brosky served out the set for Marist. The libero aced Hartford twice in the last five points to give Marist a 25-17 win in the third set.
Marist and Hartford had 12 ties in the first 24 points of the fourth set. The Red Foxes broke free with three straight points on a Hawk error, a block by Estes and Burke, and an Estes kill to go ahead 15-12. Marist grew the lead to five at 18-13 on consecutive Hartford errors. The Red Foxes hit .333 in the fourth set, their highest percentage of the night. A Harridsleff kill put the finishing touches on the Hawks, as Marist won the fourth set 25-17.
Marist hit a combined .220 for the match, hitting over .300 in the third and fourth sets. The Red Foxes' defense held Hartford under .200 in each set and a mark of .115 for the match. Marist also held a 10-7 advantage in blocks. Macro led the Hawks with 11 kills as Kami Nethersole added 10 of her own. Boss led Hartford with 10 digs.
Marist will host the 2009 Volley in the Valley this Saturday and Sunday at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes will take on Bucknell Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Providence later that night at 7 p.m.
