WASHINGTON D.C. - The Marist men's soccer team dropped its second straight decision on Sunday afternoon at Howard. The final score was 3-1. With the loss, the Red Foxes fell to 3-2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Troy Confessore (Kendall Park, N.J.) scored the only Marist goal of the game in the 68th minute. At the time, the Red Foxes trailed 1-0, and Confessore leveled the score at one off a direct kick from 20 yards out. He took five shots in the game and put two on goal.
"We missed two golden opportunities to put the game away when the score was tied at one," head coach Matt Viggiano said. "They found a way to get it done, we didn't. Howard got the result. That will come as we mature as a team."
Howard jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute as Chris Sutherland scored off a cross by Phillip Borde from 10 yards away. Borde finished the game with a goal and two assists to lead the Bison in the match.
The game remained knotted at one until the 84th minute when Jamil Devers scored the eventual game-winning goal from eight yards out. The Bison added an insurance goal in the 87th minute to arrive at the final score.
Red-shirt junior Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) made seven saves for Marist in goal, but came up on the short end. He suffered his second loss of the season.
Marist will return to action on Friday, Sept. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET in the Hensor/Zaher Memorial Classic. The Red Foxes will take on Seattle at Oregon State University.
