LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball picked the best time to hit .400 in a set Sunday afternoon, using that hitting performance in the fifth set against Siena Sunday to win 15-12 and the match 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-12) at UHY Court at the ARC. With 62 assists in the match, senior setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) passed Meghan Cochrane as the Red Foxes' all-time leader in assists. Jan now has 4,173 assists in her career, passing Cochrane's total of 4,154.
Senior Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led the Marist offense with 19 kills. Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) had a career-high 24 digs to lead the Marist defense.
Marist (8-7, 2-2 MAAC) opened the match with a 5-1 run, getting kills from Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas), Harridsleff, and Burton. The Red Foxes grew the lead to seven at 9-3 on a pair of Saints errors and a Harridsleff ace. Siena would make a short run and get within four at 12-8 on a Burgandy McCurty kill. A Schultze kill put Marist back on serve at 13-8, and two more Siena errors gave the Red Foxes a 15-8 lead. Siena just could not get it going offensively in the first set, hitting .091 for the set. Marist took its largest lead of the set at 19-11 on a Schultze kill.
Siena closed to within five at 20-15 on two Aubrey Bobo kills and a block by McCurty and Kau'i Robello. After a Foss kill made the score 21-15, the Saints got kills from McCurty and Amanda Sawlsville to get within four at 21-17. The Red Foxes would close the door from that point on, as Marist took the last four points of the set to win it 25-18.
The Red Foxes took a quick 5-3 lead to open the second set, getting a couple Foss kills as well as a service ace from Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas). Siena came back to tie the set at 5-5 on a McCurty kill and then took the lead 6-5 on a Marist error. Marist tied the set at 6-6 on a Burton error. The two teams traded points until 8-8, when a Bobo kill started a quick 3-0 run for Siena, giving the Saints an 11-8 lead.
The Red Foxes got within a point at 11-10 on a Schultze kill, but the Saints then capitalized on three Marist errors to go ahead by four, 14-10. The lead stayed at four until 17-13, when a Harridsleff kill kicked off a four point run to tie the set at 17-17. With the set tied at 19-19, Sawlsville put down a kill to gave Siena a 20-19 lead. The Saints would lead the rest of the way, winning the set 25-21 on a Bobo kill.
The two teams traded the lead early and often to start the third set, playing to an 8-8 tie. Siena then took a 10-8 lead on kills by McCurty and Brennan Johnson. Marist responded with kills by Schultze and Foss to tie the set at 10-10. With the set tied at 11-11, a Schmid kill started a five-point run for the Red Foxes that included kills by Harridsleff and Foss, as well as a block by Harridsleff and Burton. The Saints stayed within striking distance, closing to within two at 21-19 on a McCurty kill. Marist got kills from Foss and Schultze to make the score 23-20, and a Schmid ace gave the Red Foxes set point at 24-20. Siena fought off three set points with kills from McCurty and Bobo, as well as a block by Bobo and Sawlsville, making the score 24-23. However, the Saints' luck would run out as an attack error gave Marist a two sets to one advantage with a 25-23 win in the third.
Siena (5-6, 3-1 MAAC) opened the fourth set on a 7-2 run, getting two kills from McCurty and a block by McCurty and Johnson along the way. The Saints grew the lead to six, 10-4, on a Bobo kill. Marist then cut the lead to four at 10-6 on a Schultze kill and an ace by Brosky. Siena got its lead back up to six at 12-6 on a McCurty ace. After a Schmid kill made the score 12-7, the Saints went on a 4-0 run capped by a block by Sawlsville and Bobo to take a 16-7 lead. Siena grew its lead to double-digits when a Sarah Sivertson kill and a Marist error put the Saints ahead 20-9. Marist made an attempt to get back in the set, going on a 4-1 run highlighted by a block by Schultze and Burton to get within eight at 21-13. McCurty put the Saints up by nine, 22-13, with a kill as Siena won the fourth set by that margin, 25-16.
Marist jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead to start the fifth set, taking advantage of two Saints errors. The Red Foxes kept the lead at two until 6-4, when McCurty hit back-to-back kills to tie the set at 6-6. With the set tied at 7-7, Schultze hit a kill to give Marist an 8-7 lead. After a Siena error made the score 9-7, Harridsleff and Schmid combined for a block to put the Red Foxes ahead by three, 10-7. Marist took its largest lead of the set at 13-9 on a Foss kill. Foss put down another kill to give Marist match point at 14-11. Siena fought off one match point with a McCurty kill, but Foss gave Marist the 15-12 win in the set and the match win 3-2.
Siena outhit Marist .260-217, but hit only .190 in the fifth set. The Saints also held an 80-65 dig advantage as well as a 9-7 edge in blocks. McCurty led all players with 27 kills and hit .390, while Bobo added 20 kills and a team-high 22 digs. No other Siena player had more than four kills.
Marist travels to western New York next weekend to take on Canisius and Niagara. The Red Foxes will take on the Golden Griffins of Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center.
