POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team won its first two matches in the 2009 Volley In The Valley Tournament at the McCann Center Saturday, sweeping both Bucknell and Providence. The Red Foxes beat Bucknell 25-22, 25-15. 25-11 and Providence 25-18, 25-13, 25-16. The Marist defense held both opponents to under .100 hitting and have won its last four matches.
Marist (4-2) led the entire way in the first set against Bucknell, capping the first set win on a Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) service ace. Schmid's prowess at the service line was in full display in the second set. With the Red Foxes trailing 5-3, Schmid hit five consecutive service aces to put Marist ahead 8-5. She added two more aces late in the set, giving the Red Foxes a 22-14 lead. Marist won the set 25-15 on a Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) kill. The Red Foxes hit .391 in the third set and held Bucknell to a -.103 hitting percentage to run away with the third set 25-11.
Foss led Marist with eight kills against Bucknell. Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) added seven kills while Schmid had five kills to go with nine service aces. Libero Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with 11 digs, as setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had 10 digs and 18 assists.
The Red Foxes got out to a hot start in their nightcap against the Friars, taking a 14-6 lead on three kills by Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) and a pair of Foss kills. Marist hit .375 in the first set and got kills from Harridsleff and Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) to win the first set 25-18. Marist's defense stepped it up another notch in the second set, holding Providence to a -.042 hitting percentage. The Red Foxes opened the set on an 8-1 run, getting four Schultze kills in the process. Marist then got the lead up to nine, 13-4, on back-to-back Schmid aces. Ahead 22-13, the Red Foxes closed the set on a Harridsleff kill, a Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) service ace, and a Friar error to win the set 25-13.
The third set against Providence was the most closely-played of the three Saturday night. The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie with Marist able to pull away. A Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) kill sparked a 9-0 run for the Red Foxes and a 21-12 lead. Schultze put the capper on the match at 24-16 with her 11th kill of the night, giving Marist a 25-16 win in the third set and a 3-0 match win. The senior's 11 kills led Marist, as Harridsleff had eight kills with no errors on 12 attempts. Foss added seven kills and eight digs. Brosky led Marist's back row defense with 11 digs. Sophomore Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) added nine digs.
Marist closes play in the 2009 Volley In The Valley Tournament Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the McCann Center against Bryant.
