WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team won its second game of the season, as they defeated Army, 1-0 at West Point's Clinton Field on Tuesday night. The Red Foxes improved to 2-0-1, behind a goal by junior forward Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.). The tally was his team-leading eighth career goal and third game-winner.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference co-defensive player of the week Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) earned his third straight shutout for the Red Foxes in goal. He made three saves on the night. This is the longest stretch that a Marist goalie has not allowed a goal since 2004, when Mike Valenti pitched seven straight shutouts.
Touloumis got his goal in the 48:24 mark, off a feed from sophomore Tim Garger (Garden City, N.Y.). Touloumis took a shot just 22 seconds earlier that went wide. He converted on his second opportunity to give Marist a 1-0 advantage. The assist was Garger's first of the season.
The Red Foxes held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 3-1 advantage in the second half. Marist is now 2-0 when they have more corners than its opponent.
The Red Foxes, ranked eighth in this week's NSCAA North Atlantic Region, will continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Marist will travel Philadelphia, Pa., to face the Drexel Dragons.
