POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team was downed by Niagara by a score of 72-56 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Monday at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes were trailing by four points at the half, but the Purple Eagles started the second half on an 11-1 run and never led by fewer than 10 the rest of the way.
Red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba (Cergy, France) led the Red Foxes with 12 points, and added three assists and three rebounds. Junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) had 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) gave the Red Foxes three scorers in double digits with 10, giving him eight consecutive games in double figures in scoring.
Rob Garrison led Niagara with 18 points, and also had five steals. Tyrone Lewis finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Bilal Benn had 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists, and Kashief Edwards finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Nelson had seven assists against just two turnovers.
The first half included seven ties and eight lead changes. With 6:09 left in the first half, a three-pointer by Price put the Red Foxes in front 23-21. However, just 1:43 later, a three-pointer by Tyrone Lewis gave Niagara a 29-26 advantage, and the Purple Eagles never trailed the rest of the way.
Niagara started the second half by scoring nine consecutive points in the first 2:10, which included four points by Benn, a three-pointer by Garrison and a layup by Lewis. Marist cut its deficit to 10 with 15:55 to play on a jumper by freshman guard Sam Prescott (Philadelphia, Pa.), but Niagara then went on a 13-2 run over the next 4:41 to take a 21-point lead. The Purple Eagles led by as much as 22 in the second half.
Niagara shot 22-for-28 from the free-throw line while Marist was just 3-for-5. The Purple Eagles also committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 18 by the Red Foxes.
Niagara now stands at 11-9 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC; Marist is now 1-17 overall and 1-7 in conference.
Marist will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Fairfield. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
