Marist Men Drop Home MAAC Contest To Fairfield, 70-50

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Fairfield on Thursday by a score of 70-50 at the McCann Center. Junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes in both points (11) and rebounds (eight).

The Red Foxes had a total of three scorers in double digits. In addition to Bauer, red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba (Cergy, France) and freshman guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) scored 10 apiece.

Fairfield's Anthony Johnson had game highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson scored his 1,000th career point with 7:54 left in the first half. Derek Needham contributed 13 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals, while Yorel Hawkins had 13 points and six rebounds.

Fairfield got off to a fast start, hitting 10 of its first 11 shots from the field en route to building a 25-9 lead just seven minutes into the game. A layup by Rusin with 4:28 remaining in the first half cut Fairfield's lead to 31-23, but the Red Foxes got no closer the rest of the way. The Stags took a 37-26 halftime lead, and ran their lead to as much as 25 in the second half.

Fairfield shot .519 (28-for-54) from the field, as compared to just .354 (17-for-48) for Marist. The Stags also held a 38-23 rebounding advantage. Marist did commit a season-low nine turnovers in the contest.

Fairfield improved to 14-5 overall and 7-2 in the MAAC; Marist fell to 1-18 overall and 1-8 in conference play.

Marist returns to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes close out their three-game homestand by hosting Loyola. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
