NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 61-42 defeat at Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Thursday. Three Marist freshmen scored in double digits, as guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) led the way with 12, forward Rob Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) had 11 and guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) scored 10.
Red-shirt freshman forward Dorvell Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with eight rebounds. Carter and Johnson also blocked two shots apiece.
Iona led wire-to-wire, as the Gaels scored the first 12 points of the game before the Red Foxes got on the scoreboard with a layup by junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) at the 15:38 mark. The Gaels then scored the next five points to jump out to a 17-2 lead.
Iona led by as much as 17 in the first half, but the Red Foxes held the Gaels to just four points over the last 7:07 of the half as Iona took a 30-17 lead into the locker room.
Marist cut Iona's lead to eight by starting the second half on a 9-4 spurt. A pair of free throws by red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba (Cergy, France) made the score 34-26 in favor of Iona with 17:14 to play. However, the Red Foxes would draw no closer as they shot just .304 (7-for-23) in the second half. Marist scored just two points in the final 6:12, and none in the last 3:31.
Scott Machado led Iona with 14 points, and also had six assists against no turnovers and four steals. Alejo Rodriguez had 13 points to go along with game-highs of 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Marist shot just .326 (15-for-46) for the game, while Iona shot .410 (25-for-61). Iona outrebounded Marist 40-33, with 15 of the Gaels' rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Red Foxes committed 22 turnovers, while the Gaels had just 12.
Marist is now 1-20 overall and 1-10 in the MAAC; Iona is now 16-6 on the season and 8-3 in conference play.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, as they will face conference rival Siena for the first time this season.
