JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 61-49 defeat at Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Monday. Freshman guard Sam Prescott (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied his career high with 14 points, and freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) had 12 for his third straight double-digit scoring game.
Junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with eight rebounds, and played a team-high 37 minutes. The Red Foxes were perfect from the free-throw line in the game, converting all 18 of their free-throw attempts.
Two free throws by Bauer with 15:27 remaining in the first half gave the Red Foxes their only lead of the contest at 4-2. However, Saint Peter's answered by going on a 10-2 run, as the Peacocks took the lead for good on a layup by Jeron Belin with 14:02 left in the first half. Saint Peter's took a 27-21 halftime lead.
A three-pointer by Prescott with 17:22 to play cut the Red Foxes' deficit to 31-27. Saint Peter's responded by going on a 13-0 run over the next 6:53 to put the game away. The Peacocks never led by less than 12 the rest of the way.
The Peacocks' Nick Leon led all scorers with 16 points. Leon shot 6-for-10 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Ryan Bacon added 12 points and eight rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end.
For the game, Saint Peter's shot .482 (27-for-56) from the field, while Marist shot just .357 (15-for-42). The Peacocks held a 31-27 edge in rebounding and committed just 10 turnovers to the Red Foxes' 15.
Marist fell to 1-12 overall and 1-3 in MAAC play; Saint Peter's now stands at 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host Princeton in a non-conference contest at 7:30 p.m. Marist will be hosting Camp Night, and all children who attended a 2009 Marist Athletics summer camp will receive free admission.
