POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Princeton on Wednesday at the McCann Center by a score of 77-58. The Red Foxes were led in scoring by freshman guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.), who tied his career high with 16 points.
Rusin shot 6-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point range. Freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) scored in double digits for the fourth consecutive game, finishing with 13 points and five assists.
For the game, Marist shot .488 (21-for-43) from the field and .533 (8-for-15) from three-point range. However, Princeton shot .574 (27-for-47) from the field and .588 (10-for-17) from three-point range.
Patrick Saunders led the Tigers in scoring with 21 points and 22 minutes, and enjoyed a perfect shooting night. Saunders was 8-for-8 from the field and 5-for-5 from three-point range.
Marist never led in the game. With the score tied at six apiece and 17:22 remaining in the first half, a three-pointer by Princeton's Dan Mavraides gave the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. The shot also started Princeton on a 14-3 run, as the Tigers took a 20-9 lead just 7:09 into the game. Saunders scored 14 of the Tigers' first 20 points.
The closest the Red Foxes got after that early run was five. A basket by freshman guard Sam Prescott (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the Red Foxes to within 24-19 with 8:26 left in the half. However, Princeton then responded with an 8-2 run to build its lead back to 11. The Tigers took a 40-29 lead at halftime.
A basket by Rusin with 17:20 remaining cut Marist's deficit to 44-36, but the Red Foxes did not come any closer the rest of the way.
Marist held a 25-22 edge in rebounding. Red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba paced the Red Foxes with six boards. Princeton committed just seven turnovers, while the Red Foxes had 14.
Princeton improved to 8-5; Marist fell to 1-13.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, when they host Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be Boy Scout/Youth Night, as all Boy Scouts are encouraged to attend the game in uniform, and players will be available for postgame autographs.
