JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Marist freshman Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) of the women's soccer team scored both goals in Marist's 2-0 victory at Saint Peter's in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener for both teams. Panzner has scored three goals in the last two games for the Red Foxes. Marist improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Senior goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) notched her fifth shutout of the season in the win. She made two saves in the match. Balzarini now has 12 career shutouts and is two away from tying Marist's all-time record of 14 held by Mellanie Nai.
Panzer got the Red Foxes on the board in the 17th minute with an unassisted tally to give Marist a 1-0 advantage. She struck again with an insurance goal in the 57th minute off a pass from Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.). The assist was Guiney's team leading third of the year.
Marist outshot Saint Peter's (3-7, 0-1 MAAC) in the match 14-6, including a commanding 11-2 advantage in the second half. The Red Foxes also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Red Foxes will return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 3 when they continue MAAC play against the Manhattan Jaspers in Riverdale, N.Y. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
