NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 2-0 victory at Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match Friday afternoon. Sophomore Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) scored goals for Marist, who improved to 5-0 in games where it scores first.
Senior goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) notched his third clean sheet of the season for Marist. He tallied three saves in the match.
"It was a great team effort on the road," Head Coach Matt Viggiano said. "We came out and played very organized soccer this afternoon. It was the most complete 90 minutes we have played all year."
Brossard got the Red Foxes on the board in the 19th minute with his fifth goal of the season off a pass from senior Mike McGowan (Masuk, Conn.).
Marist (6-5, 1-1 MAAC) held off three straight Iona corner kicks in the 23rd minute. The three opportunities occurred in a 27 second span. The Gaels took their first shot on goal with 12 seconds to play in the stanza. Mario Rio's attempt was saved by Pilla.
In the second half, Brossard put a pair of shots on goal 58 seconds apart. Both tries were saved by Iona goalie Jesse Fullerton. The shots came in the 64th and 65th minutes.
Iona (3-7-1, 1-2 MAAC) had its closest chance of the match in the 73rd minute. Marcellin Bilali hit the post with a header shot. The Red Foxes countered with an insurance goal by Szabo with 16:29 to play in regulation.
Marist outshot Iona 16-11 in the match and held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Foxes will conclude a three-game road trip to open MAAC play on Sunday, Oct. 17. Marist will travel to Fairfield for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Stags.
