NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team suffered its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) loss at the hands of the Niagara Purple Eagles on the road Friday night. The final score was 1-0. With the loss, the Red Foxes fell to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Kayla Piacano scored in the eighth minute to lift the Purple Eagles past the Red Foxes. She finished to the far post for the goal for Niagara (7-4-1, 2-2 MAAC).
Trailing 1-0, Marist had a solid chance in the 19th minute. Junior Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.) took a pair of shots. The first one was saved by Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers saved the first one while the second went over the frame.
The Red Foxes took three shots in the final 2:31 of the match, but Bowers was able to make the only save that went on the goal. Shots were taken by freshman Kylee McIntosh (Cheshire, Conn.), sophomore Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) and Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.).
Despite the loss, the Red Foxes outshot Niagara 20-8, including a 16-1 mark in the second stanza.
Marist will return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. when the Red Foxes take on Canisius in Buffalo. The match will be Marist's final road match of the regular season.
