BUFFALO, N.Y. - Behind a two-goal performance from sophomore Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.), the Marist women's soccer team defeated Canisius 3-1 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match at Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. With the win, the Red Foxes took sole possession of first place in the MAAC with a conference record of 5-1.
All four goals in the match were scored in the second half. In addition to the pair of goals by Sabia, junior Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.) tallied her first goal of the season in the 50th minute. The Hannis tally was the game-winner.
Marist (9-7, 5-1 MAAC) got the scoring started in the 47th minute as Sabia put the Red Foxes ahead 1-0. Hannis grew the lead to two goals 2:08 later with an unassisted goal of her own.
After Laura Ellis of the Golden Griffins tallied her second goal of the season in the 79th minute, Sabia added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to give Marist a 3-1 advantage. Sabia has now tallied 11 career goals, and ties her for ninth place on the all-time goals list.
In the match, Marist outshot Canisius (9-6, 3-2 MAAC) 20-11. Each team put seven shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made six saves in her ninth win of the year.
The Red Foxes will close out the regular season with a three-game homestand at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Marist opens the stretch on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. when it welcomes Siena for a MAAC match. The Marist Athletics Department will host "Kick for a Cure," a breast cancer awareness match for the Siena contest.
