FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Marist volleyball team fell to the Fairfield Stags, 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon in a rematch of last year's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinals. Freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) led Marist with six kills in the match while junior Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished with a team-high seven digs.
Marist (7-10, 2-3 MAAC) found itself trailing 3-0 to start the first set, but with senior Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) serving, the Red Foxes strung together four consecutive points on four Fairfield errors to take a 4-3 lead. Marist held a 10-8 lead after a kill by sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.), but saw its lead gradually slip away as the Stags went on a run of their own to jump ahead 13-12. From there, Fairfield would not look back as it went on to win the first set, 25-18.
Fairfield (6-10, 5-0 MAAC) opened up a comfortable 13-2 lead to start the second set. The Stags led by as many as 13 points in the game, as Marist could not climb out of the early hole it dug itself. Fairfield went on to win the second set, 25-10, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Stags continued their hot hitting in the third set, building a 10-5 lead over Marist. The Red Foxes remained within striking distance, however, as they trimmed the Stags' lead to 10-7. But Fairfield began to pull away from Marist once again and eventually went on to seal the third set victory, 25-12, and win the match, 3-0.
The Stags received a match-high 10 kills by Brianna Dixion while Haililani Pokipala tallied 11 digs - also a match-high.
Marist continues its weekend road trip tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when it faces Loyola in another MAAC contest.
