DES MOINES, Iowa - Senior wide receiver James LaMacchia (Bronx, N.Y.) set Marist's all-time program record for receptions, but the Red Foxes suffered a 42-0 loss to Drake in a Pioneer Football League game on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
LaMacchia caught five passes in the contest, giving him 135 for his career. The record-setting reception, his fourth of the afternoon, came on a 13-yard pass from junior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) with 11:35 left in the second quarter.
Drake opened the scoring on its first drive with an eight-yard touchdown run by Tom Kostek. The Bulldogs made it 14-0 with 4:08 left in the first period on a 49-yard punt return by Mike Lahart.
Drake added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Pat Cashmore's one-yard run capped a nine-play, 57-yard drive just 50 seconds into the period to make the score 21-0. With 4:37 left in the second quarter, Mike Piatkowski found Drew Blackmon four a five-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 28-0.
Piatkowski's five-yard scoring run capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive to give Drake a 35-0 lead five seconds into the fourth quarter, and Trey Morse scored on a one-yard run with 1:32 left to close out the scoring.
LaMacchia led the Red Foxes with five receptions for 34 yards. Defensively, junior linebacker Alexander Killian (Farmingdale, N.J.) led Marist with 11 tackles, and sophomore linebacker Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.) had 10, including eight solo stops.
For Drake, Piatkowski went 29-for-41 through the air for 266 yards. Steve Platek led the Bulldogs with 11 catches for 106 yards.
Drake outgained Marist in total yardage, 433-77. The Bulldogs went 10-for-19 on third down, while Marist was 3-for-15.
Marist fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the PFL; Drake is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in PFL play.
Marist will return to action next week, when the Red Foxes travel to Valparaiso for a PFL game. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
