RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer held a 32-4 advantage in shots as the Red Foxes defeated Manhattan 2-0 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Sunday morning. To earn the win, sophomores Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made three saves for her second straight shutout and sixth this season.
Marist (6-6, 2-0 MAAC) could not get on the board in the first half, but did take 19 shots, eight of which went on goal. However, Manhattan (2-8-1, 0-2 MAAC) goalkeeper Kara Davis made all eight stops in the stanza. She made 11 saves in the match.
The Red Foxes struck first when Sabia scored after a scramble in the box. Her eighth career tally came in the 79th minute. The goal gave Marist a 1-0 lead on the Jaspers.
Frey increased the Marist lead to 2-0 when she took a pass from senior Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) in the box and finished to the top right corner of the goal in the 81st minute. The tally was Frey's first of the season.
With the win, the Red Foxes are off to a 2-0 start in conference play for the second straight season. In the match, Marist held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 when Marist hosts Rider in a MAAC match at 7 p.m. The match begins a stretch where five of the final seven matches will be played at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Admission to all Marist soccer games is FREE and open to the public.
