BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Marist football team defeated Campbell 42-14 in a Pioneer Football League game on Saturday. Senior wide receiver James LaMacchia (Bronx, N.Y.) had 11 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and junior quarterback Tommy Reilly (Marlton, N.J.) was 21-for-29 for 313 passing yards and three touchdowns.
The Red Foxes rolled up 418 yards of total offense, including 105 yards on the ground. Junior running back Ryan Dinnebeil (River Vale, N.J.) led the way with 68 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns.
Marist got on the scoreboard on its opening drive, when junior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) punctuated a 13-play, 73-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run with 8:25 left in the first quarter. Dinnebeil staked the Red Foxes to a 14-0 lead with an eight-yard scoring run with 12:57 left in the second quarter.
With just 1:04 left until halftime, Daniel Polk connected with Alex Royal for a six-yard touchdown, which brought Campbell to within seven at 14-7. However, junior Jaquan Bryant (St. Albans, N.Y.) returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Campbell 38. Six plays later, Reilly's 11-yard touchdown pass to LaMacchia gave Marist a 21-7 lead going into halftime.
Campbell answered back at the start of the third quarter, as Polk's seven-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Jordan made the score 21-14 with 11:26 left in the third quarter. Later in the third quarter with the Red Foxes still holding a seven-point lead, Campbell drove into the Marist red zone, but junior Michael Rios (Miami, Fla.) blocked a field-goal attempt to keep the Red Foxes' lead at seven.
With 1:16 left in the third, Reilly's 15-yard touchdown pass to LaMacchia gave Marist a 28-14 lead. With Campbell driving at the beginning of the fourth quarter, junior cornerback Carlos Padilla (Edison, N.J.) ended the scoring threat with an interception in the end zone. On the next play, Reilly threw an 80-yard touchdown to Rios to put Marist up 35-14. The Red Foxes closed out the scoring with 10:44 remaining on Dinnebeil's 10-yard touchdown run, his second score of the day.
Marist forced three turnovers in the game while not committing any.
The Red Foxes improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the PFL. Campbell fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.
