LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist Volleyball team lost to Rider, 3-2 (23-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-18, 15-10) on Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. After winning the first two sets, Rider won the next three sets and the match.
The Red Foxes received a double-double from freshman Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) finished with 16 kills and four total blocks, while freshman Gabby Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y.) added 36 assists, 15 digs and two kills.
"Gabby once again did a good job stepping into the setting position for us with both of our setters most likely out for the season," Head Coach Tom Hanna said. "We need to be more consistent in other aspects of our play and we'll win matches going forward."
Marist (12-14, 7-7 MAAC) started the first set trading points with Rider. After being tied 10-10, the Broncs went on to take a 16-11 lead. The Red Foxes chipped away at the deficit, and a service ace from Schmid forced a Rider timeout with Marist trailing 20-19. From there, the teams went back and forth until a pair of kills from Hill ultimately gave Marist a 25-23 victory to start the match up 1-0.
In the second set, Rider (2-22, 1-13 MAAC) jumped out to a quick 7-1 advantage. After trailing 17-11, the Red Foxes scored seven straight points, and a service ace from Lutjen gave them an 18-17 lead over the Broncs. After being forced to extra points, Marist hung on to win the set 28-26 with back-to-back kills from Hill, and took a 2-0 advantage in the match.
After being tied 17-17 in the third set, kills and a service ace from Rider allowed the Broncs to pull ahead in the third set. Rider went on an 8-3 run to take 25-20 win and stay alive in the match, down 2-1. Marist would not see a lead in the fourth set, and after being tied 4-4, Rider began to pull away. After the Red Foxes came within five points at 19-14, the Broncs rolled to a 25-18 victory, tying the match 2-2 and forcing a fifth set.
Rider saw an early 10-4 advantage in the deciding set. Marist was able to come within three points at 11-8, but could not find its way on top and fell in the fifth set 15-10, losing the match 3-2.
