POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team extended its winning streak to a season-long three games on Friday night after a 2-1 win over Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes erased a 1-0 deficit and scored consecutive goals, both of which were set up by freshman Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.).
The game-winning goal was scored in the 87th minute by sophomore Chelsea Botta (East Longmeadow, Mass.), after a direct kick was sent into the box by Guiney. Botta got to the ball a few feet from the goal and headed the free kick over the goal line.
Rider (5-5-2, 1-2 MAAC) opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the match. Jody Sokol settled the ball in the box and blasted a shot over the outstretched arm of senior goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.).
Senior Amy Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.) leveled the score at one in the 43rd minute, just 5:17 after the Broncs took a 1-0 lead. She also headed a direct kick from Guiney into the goal. The direct kick was taken from midfield.
The Red Foxes controlled the second half of play. Prior to Botta's game-winning goal, Guiney had a pair of shots go off the cross bar and post respectively in the 85th and 86th minutes.
In the match, Marist (7-6, 3-0 MAAC) outshot Rider 24-8 including a 14-3 margin in the second half. The Red Foxes also notched four corner kicks to the Broncs one.
Marist has started conference play with a perfect 3-0 record in 2010. It is the first time since the 2007 season that the Red Foxes have won their first three conference matches. In 2007, Marist won the MAAC Regular Season Title.
