LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team suffered a 5-1 defeat in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener at Siena on Saturday afternoon. The Saints opened up a 4-0 lead at Siena Turf Field, before the Red Foxes got on the board in the 64th minute on a Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) tally.
Siena's Steve Covino led all scorers with two goals as the Saints took 22 shots in the contest. Other goals for Siena (4-5-1, 1-0 MAAC) were scored by Matt Hemsley, Emery Welshman, and Matt Turcio.
"We didn't win the battles today, we lost the 50-50 tackles and we didn't show enough grit," Head Coach Matt Viggiano said. "MAAC games aren't as much about technique, they are about who wants it more. We need to bring it every day; otherwise, we are going struggle."
Siena took a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals by Covino and Hemsley in the 10th and 23rd minutes respectively. Over the first 17 minutes of the second half, the Covino and Welshman doubled the Saints' lead at 4-0 in the 63rd minute.
Thirty-seven seconds after the fourth Siena goal was scored, Brossard answered to get Marist (5-5, 0-1 MAAC) on the board in the 64th minute. He took a pass from senior Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) and Brossard fired the shot past Saints' keeper Adam Myers from the top left corner of the 18-yard box.
In the match, Marist totaled eight corner kicks to Siena's five; however, the Red Foxes were outshot 22-11 by the Saints.
The Red Foxes will continue a three-game road trip at Iona on Friday, Oct. 15. Kickoff in New Rochelle is set for 3 p.m.
