POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team defeated Fairfield 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 25-14) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Senior Day, which took place on Saturday. Senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) led the Red Foxes with 12 kills, seven service aces, and seven total blocks.
Junior Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) had 15 digs.
In the first set, Marist (13-16, 8-9 MAAC) was neck-and-neck with Fairfield with ten tie scores, the last one coming at 16 point apiece. From there, the Red Foxes went on a 6-1 run capped by two Schmid service aces to lead the set 23-17. After the Stags scored three straight points, a pair of kills from Estes allowed Marist to put the first set away 25-20.
Marist forced a Fairfield (11-18, 10-7 MAAC) timeout with a 10-5 advantage after a service ace from Schmid. The Stags came within two points at 13-11, but were forced to call another timeout the Red Foxes leading 17-12. Marist ran away with the set after that, scoring five points in a row to make it 23-13. A kill from Harridsleff ended the second set 25-16, and gave Marist a two set lead.
The Red Foxes found themselves trailing early in the third set, with Fairfield scoring the first five points. Marist came within three at 7-4, but that was the closest it would get as Fairfield scored another five straight points, making it 12-4. The Stags would only continue to extend their lead, and would take the third set 25-15 to stay alive in the match.
In the fourth and final set, Marist returned to form and led 11-6 at Fairfield's first timeout. The Red Foxes held onto a comfortable advantage, and forced another timeout after scoring four straight points capped by a Schmid kill to make it 16-8. Marist would not look back from there and went on to win the fourth set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
For Fairfield, Lauren Hughes had 12 kills while Rachel Romansky added 33 assists. The Stags also received 17 digs from Kara Reis.
Marist travels to Siena tomorrow to play its last regular season match at 2 p.m. When the teams met on Oct. 10, the Red Foxes defeated the Saints 3-1.
Prior to the match, the Red Foxes honored four members of this year's senior class - Brosky, Schmid, Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Raeanna Gutkowski (Long Valley, N.J.).
