LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Marist volleyball team's 2010 season came to an end with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-16) loss to Manhattan in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Saturday at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex. The match occurred in the consolation bracket of the championships, with Marist earning a sixth-place finish and Manhattan coming in fifth as a result.
Sophomore Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.), who set the program's career record for digs the previous day, led the Red Foxes with 13 of them in her final collegiate match. Junior Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) contributed 26 assists.
In the first set, the Lady Jaspers quickly jumped out to a 13-3 lead, and led by as much as 15 before cruising to the 25-11 triumph. Manhattan led the second set wire-to-wire as well, jumping out to a 15-7 lead before the Red Foxes clawed their way back into it. Kills from senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) and freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.), brought the Red Foxes to within 22-20, but the Lady Jaspers then scored three consecutive points to close out the set.
The Red Foxes were trailing 3-1 in the third set when back-to-back aces by Schmid tied the score at three apiece. However, a service error then started a run of five straight Manhattan points, and the Lady Jaspers maintained the lead for the rest of the set.
The Red Foxes finished the season with a 15-19 record.
