BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist women's soccer team (10-9-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third minute of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinals match with third-seeded Siena. Four Siena second half goals lifted the Saints over the Red Foxes at Ridley Athletic Complex on the campus of Loyola University Maryland on Friday night. The final score was 4-2.
Freshman Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) and Samantha Panzner (Livingtson, N.J.) each scored a goal for Marist in the third and 89th minutes respectively. Guiney netted her second tally of the year, while Panzner found the back of the net for the fourth time.
Guiney got the Red Foxes out to an early 1-0 lead just 2:01 into the match. She bent a corner kick from the left side just inside the near post to give Marist an early advantage. The second-seeded Red Foxes took the lead into the locker room.
In the second half Siena scored four times over a 23 minute span. The Saints got goals from four different attackers - Lindsay Tegas, Tabitha Tice, Brittany Pfaff and Ashleigh Barone.
The Red Foxes cut the Saints lead to two goals at the 88:28 mark Panzner scored and made the margin 4-2.
Siena outshot Marist 17-7 including an 11-4 advantage in the first half; however, the Red Foxes held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Marist concludes its season with a record of 10-9-1 and finished in second place in the MAAC standings. The second-place finish was the best result since the Red Foxes won the conference regular season title in 2007.
