POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes outshot the Purple Eagles 26-15, but were unable to score as the loss eliminated them from MAAC Tournament contention.
In the 12th minute of the match, Niagara took a 1-0 lead on an own goal when a Marist deflection when into the net. The Purple Eagles closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when Levi Tesch scored off a pass from Brandon Wellington on a 2-on-1.
Needing two wins in the weekend to ensure a shot at qualifying for the MAAC Championships, Marist came out of the gates aggressive. The Red Foxes took five corner kicks to Niagara's two in the first half, and outshot the Purple Eagles 16-3.
For the match, the Red Foxes took 11 corner kicks and fired 26 shots in the match, but only put seven shots on goal. Sophomore forward Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) made seven saves for the Red Foxes.
The loss dropped Marist to 3-5 in the MAAC and 8-9 overall. Niagara improved to 4-3-1 in MAAC play and 6-9-2 overall with the win. Goalkeeper Jacob Vertel made six saves to record the shutout for the Purple Eagles.
Marist will face Canisius at home on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in its final match of the regular season. Prior to kickoff, the program will hold its annual Senior Day ceremony.
