POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Seniors Mike McGowan (Oxford, Conn.) and Desmond Farrelly (Emerson, N.J.) of the Marist men's soccer team each scored a goal on senior day as the Red Foxes closed the 2010 campaign with a 4-2 win over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match. For the second time this season, six players tallied a point in the match.
Marist (9-9, 4-5 MAAC) was led by junior Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) netted a goal and an assist respectively.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as McGowan scored off a pass from Touloumis. McGowan finished off a through ball from Touloumis with his toe that beat Canisius goalkeeper Luke Seymour. Marist took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Brossard made the Marist lead 2-0 at the 52:54 mark. The ball moved through the midfield and down the sideline as George and Witkowski connected on passes. Brossard finished the play on a cross from Witkowski.
After a Steve Mahon goal made the score 2-1 in the 56th minute, Witkowski responded with his ninth goal of the season 14 seconds after the Canisius (3-13-1, 3-6 MAAC) tally.
The Golden Griffins reduced the deficit to one goal in the 61st minute as Matt Sprague put a ball to the far post that trickled over the goal line.
Farrelly increased the lead to two goals at 4-2 in the 73rd minute when he headed a cross into the back of the net from Witkowski.
In the match, Marist held a 24-17 advantage in shots, and an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. The Red Foxes took seven corner kicks to Canisius' three.
Defensively, senior Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) made six saves for the Red Foxes in his final collegiate match.
Marist concludes the 2010 season with a record of 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the MAAC.
