LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Behind the second straight double-double from junior guard Corielle Yarde (Reading, Pa.) of the Marist women's basketball, the Red Foxes upset Louisville 74-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Duel in the Desert Tournament at Cox Pavilion on the campus of University of Nevada Las Vegas. As a team, it is Marist's second win against a Big East foe this year, the first time in program history it has won multiple games against the conference in a single season.
Yarde totaled a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. She shot an efficient 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three point range. Yarde was also 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Junior forward Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) added 13 points apiece. Gang shot 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while Allenspach was 5-for-6 from the line. As a team Marist (7-2) went 24-for-29 at the free throw line and hit 19 foul shots in the second half. It shot 46.8 percent from the field.
In the first half, Marist jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a three-point basket from Yarde and a layup from Gang at the 18:14 mark.
With 12:07 to play in the frame, and the score 17-11 in favor of the Red Foxes, freshman forward Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) sparked an 11-2 over the next 4:57. During the run, Marist got five straight points from freshman Kate Oliver (Sydney, Australia). Following a pair of free throws by Charmaine Tay, senior Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) capped the run with a layup with 7:10 left. The basket allowed Marist to double up Louisville, with a 13-point lead, 26-13. It was the largest margin of the stanza.
Louisville (8-4) got as close as eight on two occasions in the final two minutes of the period, but Marist took a nine-point lead into the locker room, 35-26.
The Cardinals used a 10-2 run over 2:26 to cut the Marist lead to one, 41-40, with 15:40 to go. However, the Red Foxes responded with a 10-0 run of their own to push the lead to 11, 51-40, with 13:29 to go to put the game out of reach. During the Marist run of 10 straight points, the team got triples from Yarde and Allenspach, a jumper from Oliver and a pair of free throws from Gang.
On her first two collegiate free throw makes, Ockenden grew the lead to 14, 59-45, Marist's largest of the game with 8:55 to play. Following the pair of free throws, the Red Foxes never led by less than six.
In the final 2:43 of the game, the Red Foxes collected three straight offensive rebounds to keep possession. Allenspach, Caron and Yarde all grabbed caroms to keep Louisville from getting the ball back and secure the victory. Marist managed eight offensive rebounds in the game.
For the game, Marist forced 16 Louisville turnovers and collected one more board than the Cardinals 32-31. In the first half, the Red Foxes held the Cardinals to 8-for-23 shooting from the field and 1-for-7 from three.
Louisville's Shoni Schimmel led all scorers with 26 points, but shot 10-for -26 from the field and 3-for-10 from three point range. She was joined in double figures by Keshia Hines who added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Red Foxes will face RV/21 Nebraska in its second game of the Duel in the Desert on Sunday at the Cox Pavilion. Tip-off between Marist and the Cornhuskers is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.
