Red Foxes Fall In Defensive Battle To St. Bonaventure, 45-40

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team suffered a 45-40 setback at the hands of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Saturday evening at the McCann Center in a non-conference game. Sophomore Kelsey Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) scored a career-high 11 points to lead the Red Foxes in the loss.

Beynnon shot 5-for-9 from the field and went 1-for-2 from three-point range. She also added two assists, two steals and a rebound. On the glass, the Red Foxes were paced by junior forward Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio) who equaled a career-high with nine.

The contest got off to a quick start as St. Bonaventure (5-3) got a three-pointer from Chelsea Bowker. Gang answered a minute later with a triple of her own to even the score at three. The Bonnies got the lead to as many as six, its largest to the stanza on a jumper by Cara Gustafson to make the score 13-7 with 8:54 to play.

Marist (4-2) responded with a 5-0 run as Beynnon hit a field goal at the 8:28 mark and senior Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) completed a three-point play with 5:06 to play. Her layup and free throw cut the deficit to one, 13-12.

Freshman Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) nailed her first of two threes to tie the score at 15 with a 1:07 remaining in the half. Armelia Horton hit a pair of foul shots with 3.2 seconds to go in the period to give the Bonnies a 17-15 lead at the break.

St. Bonaventure pushed the lead to five at 22-17 with 18:07 to play in the game; however, the Red Foxes chipped away at that lead over the next five minutes and used triples from Ockenden and Best to take a 30-29 lead with 13:37 to play.

Marist led by two on two occasions, but a pair of Megan Van Tatenhove free throws tied the score at 35 at the 10:00 mark. St. Bonaventure did not trail for the final 10 minutes of the contest.

After a Bowker three made the score 43-36 with 2:22 to go, freshman Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) responded with a triple of her own to make the score 43-39.

In the game, the Bonnies held a 45-30 edge on the glass and a 14-6 edge in offensive rebounds. Bowker led all scorers with 17 points and went 5-for-11 from three-point range.

The Red Foxes will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Hartford. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn.

Notes: Beynnon scored a career-high 11 points... It is the second time this season she has posted a career-high in the category... Gang equaled a career-high with nine rebounds... Allenspach is three points from 1,000... Giorgis is two wins from 200... The Red Foxes fall to 3-2 all-time against St. Bonaventure... Marist fell to 146-13 when it holds the opposition to less than 60 points... The Red Foxes held the Bonnies to .275 shooting from the field... It was the lowest an opponent has shot against Marist this season.
