BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team lost at Canisius on Friday by a score of 71-56 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game played at the Koessler Athletic Center. Freshman guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) tied his career high in scoring by pouring in 17 for the second straight game.
Rusin shot 5-for-8 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds, and freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) contributed 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Golden Griffins had four scorers in double digits. Julius Coles, who hit four three-pointers, led all scorers with 18. Frank Turner had 16 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and two steals, while Greg Logins scored 16 in 20 minutes off the bench. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons had 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.
Canisius stormed out to a 17-2 lead just 8:19 into the game. However, a 10-2 Marist run over the final seven minutes of the first half cut the Red Foxes' deficit to 27-21 at halftime.
The Golden Griffins responded by going on a 13-4 run over the first 5:01 of the second half to grab a 15-point lead. Canisius' lead reached as much as 25 before the Red Foxes outscored the Golden Griffins 17-7 over the final six minutes.
Canisius drained 11 three-pointers and went 18-for-23 (.783) from the free-throw line. The Golden Griffins outrebounded the Red Foxes 37-27, and blocked 10 shots. Marist was 14-for-15 (.933) from the free-throw line and committed just 11 turnovers while forcing 13.
Marist is now 1-24 overall and 1-14 in the MAAC; Canisius is now 12-14 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 when they travel to Niagara. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
