IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) scored a career-high 18 points, but the Marist men's basketball team suffered a 66-65 defeat at UC Irvine in an ESPNU BracketBusters game on Saturday. The Red Foxes hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in the contest in 24 attempts, as they shot .542 from beyond the arc.
In 37 minutes, Price shot 4-for-8 from three-point range. He also had four assists against just one turnover, and had a spectacular dunk off a missed shot in the first half.
Four Red Foxes scored in double digits. Red-shirt junior guard Daye Kaba (Cergy, France) added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kaba shot 4-for-6 from three-point range and also contributed three assists and two steals. Red-shirt junior guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) added 10 points apiece.
The Red Foxes committed just eight turnovers, but were outrebounded by UC Irvine by a margin of 51-27. The Anteaters grabbed 23 offensive rebounds. Eric Wise led UC Irvine with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Darren Moore scored 13 points and hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds, and Zack Atkinson also finished with 13 points. The Anteaters held a 32-14 edge in points in the paint, and a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points.
There were seven lead changes and nine ties in the contest. Marist led for most of the first half, but a layup by Wise with 40 second left in the first half gave the Anteaters a 33-32 lead going into halftime.
A layup by Goodwin 43 seconds into the second half gave the Red Foxes back the lead at 34-33, but the Anteaters went on a 13-0 run to take a game-high lead of 12. However, the Red Foxes answered that run with one of their own, as a 9-0 spurt cut the Anteaters' lead to 46-43.
With 50 seconds to play, a layup by junior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) knotted the score at 62 apiece. On UC Irvine's ensuing possession, a jumper by Zack Atikinson with 15 seconds remaining put the Anteaters up 64-62. The Red Foxes turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and Michael Hunter hit two free throws in the closing seconds to give UC Irvine a four-point lead. Kaba hit a three-pointer to cut the margin to one with six-tenths of a second left, but the Anteaters inbounded the ball safely to secure their one-point victory.
Marist is now 1-26; UC Irvine improved to 12-16.
