FOREST CITY, N.C. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 5-3 loss to Appalachian State on Saturday as the Red Foxes played their second game in the North/South Challenge. Junior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his second of the season.
Gallic's home run drove home senior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who had led off the inning with a single. With two outs, Gallic homered to left field in the 10th pitch of his at-bat to give the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Appalachian State's Jeremy Dowdy drew a one-out walk, and Wes Hobson followed with one of his own. David Towarnicky followed with a three-run homer to give Appalachian State a 5-3 lead.
The Red Foxes outhit the Mountaineers, 7-4. Sophomore third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) was the lone Red Fox to have two hits.
Marist scored its first run in the third inning. Freshman designated hitter Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) walked to start the inning, and scored on a two-out double by freshman second baseman Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.).
Senior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalpan, N.J.) started and took the loss for the Red Foxes, falling to 1-1 on the season. Martin went 5.1 innings, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out three. He was charged with all five Appalachian State runs, four of which were earned. Junior right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) followed with 2.1 innings of hitless relief, and junior left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) retired the only batter he faced.
Taylor Miller pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Appalachian State to improve to 2-0. Chris Patterson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Appalachian State improved to 5-0 on the season; Marist is now 2-4.
Marist will conclude play in the North/South Challenge on Sunday, when the Red Foxes face Gardner-Webb. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
