FARMVILLE, Va. - The Marist baseball team defeated Longwood by a score of 6-3 on Friday in the opener of a four-game series. Junior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and his two-run triple in the seventh inning gave the Red Foxes the lead for good.
Red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and freshman designated hitter Dan Zlotnick (Somers, N.Y.) went 2-for-4.
The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the top of the third. With one out, senior shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Gallic. Nugent followed with an RBI single, which scored senior first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
Longwood answered by tying the score in its half of the third, but Marist re-claimed the lead in the fifth. Senior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) led off by getting hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored from second on a wild pitch to put the Red Foxes up 3-2.
Longwood tied the score at three apiece in its half of the fifth, and the score remained there until the top of the seventh. Prano led off the inning with a single, and advanced to third two hitters later on a single by Gauck. Gallic's triple to center scored both Prano and Gauck to put Marist up 5-3, and Nugent followed with a sacrifice fly to score Gallic and give the Red Foxes a three-run lead.
Junior right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) earned the win for the Red Foxes to improve to 2-1 on the season. Putnam tied his career high with 7.2 innings pitched, scattering 13 hits but allowing just three runs and two walks.
With two outs and the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth, Putnam was relieved by junior left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.). McKeown included a fly out to end the eighth, and then pitched the ninth to earn the first save of his career.
Marist improved to 4-7; Longwood is now 7-4.
Marist and Longwood will continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday, which is slated to start at 1 p.m.
