JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Behind the power of five straight set victories in singles, the Marist women's tennis team earned a 7-0 shutout victory over Saint Peter's in the Red Foxes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Thursday. Sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and juniors Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) each held their opponents at love for a set in their singles competitions.
McCarthy defeated Kyrsten Chen of Saint Peter's, 6-2, 6-0 at first singles. In fourth singles, Lukin bested Andrea Collomb 6-0, 6-3 and Byron cruised past Jessica Nowogrodzki 6-0, 6-1 at the fifth singles spot in the lineup.
Other singles winners included freshman Kayla O'Donovan (Garden City, N.Y.). O'Donovan got the better of Linnea Enoh Jansson, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, McCarthy paired with Sun to defeat Chen and Collomb 8-5 at first doubles.
The Red Foxes will continue its five-match road trip on Saturday, March 27. Marist will travel to Stony Brook for a dual match with the Seawolves. First serves are scheduled for noon.
